Meet Schedule 2011

May 14 Pre-Season Time Trials at Newport

Swim Meets:

May 21 Walden
May 28 Livingston (at Newport)
June 04 Oaks of Atascocita (at Newport)
June 11 Fall Creek
June 18 Forest Cove (at Newport)
June 25 Divisional Meet

This year we will have 5 dual meets which take about 6 hours each, and 1 divisional meet which takes about 10 hours. Those swimmers who reach the necessary speed will also be eligible to participate in the invitational meets – All-Stars and Ponderosa Forest. The regular season is finished on June 25th with the awards picnic scheduled for the Monday evening after Divisionals (June 27, 2011).
In order to swim at the Divisional Meet swimmers must have participated in at least 2 dual meets.

There is a team swim suit which we urge all swimmers to purchase, but it is not mandatory. All females are required to wear caps at practice and at meets. This year our supplier will be selling swim suits, caps, and goggles of competition quality at the pool (time to be announced). We also have team shirts. All are optional, but please make sure your child’s suit is a one-piece style, preferably blue in color, which is designed for competition.

Meets consist of events in the 4 basic strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly. Individual Medley (IM) is a combination of all strokes. Children 6 and Under only participate in freestyle and back stroke; 7 and Up will do all 4 strokes. A swimmer can participate in a maximum of 3 individual events and some will be swimming in relay events. The coach will decide which events and the number of events a swimmer will participate in depending on their performance at workouts and during meets.

NO CHILD WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE POOL UNTIL ALL FORMS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AND PAYMENT HAS BEEN RECEIVED IN FULL.

Parent Code of Conduct

Children’s sports are supposed to be fun-for the children.  Unfortunately, many parents, fans and coaches don’t realize that their actions, whether verbal or nonverbal, can have a lasting emotional effect on children.  Too many children are leaving sports activities because the fun is unfairly taken away by adults.  This following Code of Conduct is for parents and spectators to abide by at every practice and meet.

Preamble
The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and size core principles:  trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring and good citizenship.  The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these “size pillars of character”.

I therefore agree:
1.     I will not force my child to participate in sports.
2.     I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the sport is for youth, not adults.
3.     I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or the safety of others.
4.     I will learn the rules of the sport and the policies of the league.
5.     I (and my guests) will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy, and by
demonstrating positive support for all swimmers, coaches, officials and spectators at every meet, practice, or other sporting event.
6.     I (and my guests) will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player, or parent such a booing         and taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or gestures.
7.     I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and well being of the athletes.
8.     I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
9.     I will demand that my child treat other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, sex or
        ability.
10.   I will teach my child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of          a  race or his/her performance.
11.   I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
12.   I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a competition.
13.   I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning.  I will also de-emphasize meets and
competition in the lower age groups.
14.   I will promote the emotional and physical well being of the athletes ahead of my personal desire I may have for my child to win.
15.   I will respect the officials and their authority during meets and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches or officials at the
meets, and will take time to speak with them at an agreed upon time and place.
16.   I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain from their use at all
        sports events.
17.   I will refrain from coaching my child or other players during meets and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches of the team.

I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action that could include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Verbal warning by official, head coach and/or head of league organization
  • Written warning
  • Parental meet suspension with written documentation of incident kept on file by organizations involves
  • Meet forfeit through the official or coach
  • Parental season suspension

The basis for this code of conduct is produced by the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation.

Family Participation Letter

The Newport Swim Team and swim meets are run entirely family participation. Each family is expected to participate during the swim season to ensure that the season progresses smoothly, meets take place in an orderly manner, and that no one is overly burdened.

Each family is required to pay a $100.00 Pre-Volunteer Deposit at registration. When (6) ‘volunteer shifts’ have been completed, the $100.00 deposit will be returned. The work needed to run each meet is divided into two shifts so that no one has to work the entire meet (PLEASE NOTICE THAT THERE WILL ONLY BE 2 SHIFTS DURING A MEET, THIS YEAR). Parents can sign up to volunteer on a first come basis and upon completing an assigned shift, an authorized Swim Team representative will record and sign off verifying that the session of work was done.

The following is a list of jobs that must be done to ensure a well-run season. Please read through the list and decide what you will be willing to perform.

Parent Volunteers are needed for the following jobs:

Ready Bench
Runner (time cards)
Head Timer
Timer
Ribbon Writer
Concession (Receive 2 credits for 1 shift)
Set Up Crew (Can receive credit in addition to credit for working during a meet)
Tear Down Crew (Can receive credit in addition to credit for working during a meet)
Swimmer Sign In/Out Attendant (Maximum of 1 family credit per season)
Volunteer Verification & Recording Secretary

All of the above listed duties can be done in shifts (no training necessary).

The following positions require that you must attend a class and pass a test for certification. We are always in need of officials. Please see a Board Member if you are interested in becoming certified for one of these positions.

Referee (certified)
Stroke & Turn Official (certified)
Starter (certified)
Clerk of Course (certified)
Scorer / Computer (certified)

Our goal is not to earn money from this, but to allow all parents to watch their kids swim and enjoy the meet. Hopefully, we will return all deposits received!

Thank you!
