June 21 Divisional Meet (at Newport)
This year we will have 5 dual meets which take
about 6 hours each, and 1 divisional meet which takes about 10 hours.
Those swimmers who reach the necessary speed will also be eligible
to participate in the invitational meets – All-Stars and Ponderosa
Forest. The regular season is finished on June 21 with the awards
day picnic scheduled for the Sunday after Divisionals (June 22,
2007).
In order to swim at the Divisional Meet swimmers must have
participated in at least 2 dual meets.
There is a team swim suit which we urge all swimmers to purchase,
but it is not mandatory. All females are required to wear
caps at practice and at meets. This year our supplier will be selling
swim suits, caps, and goggles of competition quality at the pool
on April 5th (at registration) and April 24th (during practice).
We also have team shirts. All are optional, but please make sure
your child’s suit is a one-piece style, preferably blue in
color, which is designed for competition.
Meets consist of events in the 4 basic strokes: freestyle, backstroke,
breast stroke and butterfly. Individual Medley (IM) is a combination
of all strokes. Children 6 and Under only participate in freestyle
and back stroke; 7 and Up will do all 4 strokes. A swimmer can participate
in a maximum of 3 individual events and some will be swimming in
relay events. The coach will decide which events and the
number of events a swimmer will participate in depending on their
performance at workouts and during meets.
NO CHILD WILL BE
ALLOWED IN THE POOL UNTIL ALL FORMS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AND PAYMENT
HAS BEEN RECEIVED IN FULL. REGISTRATIONS RECEIVED AFTER APRIL
26th, 2008 WILL BE CHARGED A LATE FEE OF AN ADDITIONAL $15.00 IN
ADDITION TO THE REGULAR REGISTRATION FEES.
NO REFUNDS WILL BE ALLOWED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Parent Code of
Conduct
Click
here to download the NEWPORT TORPEDOES SWIM TEAM Parent Code of
Conduct.doc
Children’s sports are supposed to be fun-for
the children. Unfortunately, many parents, fans and
coaches don’t realize that their actions, whether verbal or
nonverbal, can have a lasting emotional effect on children.
Too many children are leaving sports activities because the fun
is unfairly taken away by adults. This following Code
of Conduct is for parents and spectators to abide by at
every practice and meet.
Preamble
The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports
are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship and size core principles:
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring and
good citizenship. The highest potential of sports is achieved
when competition reflects these “size pillars of character”.
I therefore agree:
1. I will not force my child to participate
in sports.
2. I will remember that children participate
to have fun and that the sport is for youth, not adults.
3. I will inform the coach of any physical
disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child or
the safety of others.
4. I will learn the rules of the sport and
the policies of the league.
5. I (and my guests) will be a positive
role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect
and courtesy, and by
demonstrating positive
support for all swimmers, coaches, officials and spectators at every
meet, practice, or other sporting event.
6. I (and my guests) will not engage in
any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, player,
or parent such a booing and
taunting; refusing to shake hands; or using profane language or
gestures.
7. I will not encourage any behaviors or
practices that would endanger the health and well being of the athletes.
8. I will teach my child to play by the
rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or
violence.
9. I will demand that my child treat other
players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless
of race, creed, color, sex or
ability.
10. I will teach my child that doing one’s best
is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel
defeated by the outcome of
a race or his/her performance.
11. I will praise my child for competing fairly and
trying hard, and make my child feel like a winner every time.
12. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other
participants for making a mistake or losing a competition.
13. I will emphasize skill development and practices
and how they benefit my child over winning. I will also de-emphasize
meets and
competition in the lower
age groups.
14. I will promote the emotional and physical well being
of the athletes ahead of my personal desire I may have for my child
to win.
15. I will respect the officials and their authority
during meets and will never question, discuss, or confront coaches
or officials at the
meets, and will take
time to speak with them at an agreed upon time and place.
16. I will demand a sports environment for my child
that is free from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and I will refrain
from their use at all
sports events.
17. I will refrain from coaching my child or other players
during meets and practices, unless I am one of the official coaches
of the team.
I also agree that if I fail to abide by the aforementioned
rules and guidelines, I will be subject to disciplinary action that
could include, but is not limited to the following:Verbal warning
by official, head coach and/or head of league organization
- Written warning
- Parental meet suspension with written documentation
of incident kept on file by organizations involves
- Meet forfeit through the official or coach
- Parental season suspension
The basis for this code of conduct is produced
by the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation. |

Parent Volunteer Letter
The Newport Swim Team and swim meets are run entirely
by volunteer parents. Each family is expected to do volunteer
work during the swim season to ensure that the season progresses
smoothly, meets take place in an orderly manner, and that no one
is overly burdened.
Each family is required to pay a $75.00 Pre-Volunteer
Deposit at registration. When (5) ‘volunteer shifts’
have been completed, the $75.00 deposit will be returned.
The work needed to run each meet is divided into two shifts so that
no one has to work the entire meet. Parents can sign up to
volunteer on a first come basis and upon completing an assigned
shift, an authorized Swim Team representative will record and sign
off verifying that the session of work was done.
The following is a list of jobs that must be done
to ensure a well-run season. Please read through the list
and decide what you will be willing to perform.
Parent Volunteers are needed for the following
jobs:
Ready Bench
Runner (time cards)
Timer (Maximum of 3 credits per season)
Ribbon Writer
Concession (Receive 2 credits for 1 shift)
Set Up Crew
Tear Down Crew
Telephone Caller (information exchange)
Swimmer Sign In/Out Attendant (Maximum of 1 credit per season)
Volunteer Verification & Recording Secretary
All of the above listed duties can be done in
shifts (no training necessary).
The following positions require that you must
attend a class and pass a test for certification. We are always
in need of officials. Please see a Board Member if you are
interested in becoming certified for one of these positions.
Referee (certified)
Stroke & Turn Official (certified)
Starter (certified)
Clerk of Course (certified)
Scorer / Computer
Our goal is not to earn money from this,
but to allow all parents to watch their kids swim and enjoy the
meet. Hopefully, we will return all deposits received!
Thank you!
